Mural Questions

How long does a mural usually take to design and paint?
Part of the design process includes determining which images will be used to create your mural and putting together your detailed written proposal. This is done away from your home/business and is confirmed before the day of design and painting.
It really depends on how large and how detailed the mural is to determine how long it will take to design and paint. Once we are able to see the location of the wall and determine the design of the mural, we are able to give an estimation for the project’s timing. Frequently though, many murals take between 1-3 days.

Do you draw out my mural before it is painted?
Yes, we draw out the mural before it is painted. Depending on the images used, sometimes it isn’t necessary to draw everything first (i.e. a tree’s leaves, clouds in a sky, etc.). In cases like these, the image locations and sizes are pre-confirmed before painting.

Do I need to be at my home/business while you are painting my mural?
You do not to be present while we are painting. However, it is important to be there for about the first hour or so in order to confirm paint colors and image locations. It is also important to be reachable by phone in case an unexpected question arises.

What type of paint do you use?
We use mostly water based acrylic paints.

How long will the mural take to dry?
The mural is usually dry within an hour or so after painting. (A bit longer if a clear coat fixative is used on top for protection.)

What is a clear coat fixative?
A clear coat fixative is a clear polyurethane application that goes on top of the mural. It helps to prevent the fading of colors, keeps away humidity and little fingerprints.

Does the paint resist water?
No, the paint isn’t really water resistant. However, there isn’t a concern of the paint running if water splashes on it once it is completely dry. However, it can be sealed with a clear coat fixative to help preserve it.

Which murals need a clear coat fixative?
We recommend that a clear coat fixative be used for murals that will be in either a bathroom or kitchen where water, humidity and frequent changes in temperature are present. We also recommend it when a mural is painted in a child’s bedroom or playroom where you would expect frequent touching.

Does the paint have a smell to it?
No, the paint doesn’t really have a smell to it. (However, a clear coat fixative does have some smell to it). It is always good to keep a window or door open for added ventilation for an extra hour or so after the mural is completed. If a ceiling fan is present, one may be used to speed up the drying process too.

How long will it take to get my proposal once you meet with me?
It normally takes anywhere from a few days to a week to get your detailed proposal. It really all depends on how extensive and detailed the project is.
